Chapter Seven

Alec listened to his phone ringing and debated on whether to ignore it. No doubt, it would be Drake telling him just what a huge success last night’s party had been. He’d probably give him a hard time because he’d left without a word to anyone, but as the ringing continued, Alec forced himself to pick it up.

It was Jackie. “Alec? Where have you been? I’ve been trying to reach you all day. I tried your cell phone but there wasn’t any answer there, either. Don’t tell me you turned it off again!” He heard the panicked anger in her voice. Of course, she’d want to talk to him today. After all, he’d skipped out on her last night as well. Unfortunately, at that time she’d been the last thing on his mind.

He’d spent the day at the ranch house in East Texas with his cell phone shut off because he just didn’t want to have to deal with Drake—anymore than he wanted to think about Grace. He hadn’t been quite so successful in shutting out thoughts of her. She’d been there with him throughout the long day spent working on the deck he’d been promising himself he’d build since he bought the house. Not even the strenuous manual labor was enough to wipe away memories of the way she’d felt in his arms last night. The way she’d responded to his touch...

“Sorry, Jackie. Yeah, I had it shut off. I had to take care of some…things out of town.” He hoped she didn’t catch the way his voice faltered over that last part. “What’s up with you anyway, love? You sound terrible. What’s Drake done now?” He was reading the obvious into her frantic call.

“What’s up? Have you lost your mind? You know what’s up! You have to talk some sense into Drake. I don’t think I can bear this pretense of his for a moment longer. He’s talking about buying her a ring! An engagement ring. I’m telling you I’m not going to stand around much longer waiting for him while he pretends to be engaged to this girl just to get elected. You have to talk to him! He’s always looked up to you—he listens to you. He’ll do what you ask.”

Alec closed his eyes, feeling the strain of the long day wearing on his self-control.

“That’s where you’re wrong, Jackie. You know I’ve tried to talk him out of this but he’s got his mind made up, influenced by all those advisors he’s hired. There’s nothing else I can do.”

Silence. Alec hated Jackie’s silence. He could just picture the pout on her pretty lips, and sensed she was in tears even through the phone line.

“You could talk to that girl! Make her see what he’s planning. Make her see Drake’s only using her. No woman in her right mind would go for that. Even one with a crush on my boyfriend.”

“I’m not so sure about that.” Alec ignored her reference to Grace as “that girl.”

“Alec, I’m telling you I’m not going to put up with this for a moment.
